Post and Core

Post and Core

Post and core is a dental restoration treatment that is sometimes performed after Root canal treatment. AWhen a significant portion of a tooth’s structure is missing, a post and core can help keep a dental crown in place.

  • Its two main components:
  1. Post: A small, metal or fiber rod that’s placed within the root canal space of the tooth to provide structural support.
  2. Core: The core is a buildup material that surrounds the post and replaces the missing or damaged tooth structure, providing a foundation for a crown.
  • Benefits of post and core:
  1. Tooth Preservation: Rather than extracting a damaged tooth, post and core restorations us to preserve it, maintaining the natural structure and function of the tooth.
  2. Improved Crown Stability: The post provides a stable foundation for the crown, ensuring it remains securely in place.
  3. Aesthetic Restoration: Post and core restorations can be customized to match the color and shape of natural teeth, creating a seamless, natural look.
  4. Enhanced Chewing Function: Restoring the tooth’s structure with a post and core allows you to chew and speak confidently without discomfort or difficulty.
  • The Post and Core Restoration Process

Here’s what you can expect during the post and core restoration procedure:

  1. Assessment: Assessment of the tooth’s condition and determine if a post and core restoration is necessary.
  2. Root Canal Treatment
  3.   Preparation of post space: The root canal filling material is removed from the root canal to a predetermined length and the canal is prepared to receive the post.
  4. Post Placement: A post is carefully inserted into the root canal space and securely anchored with luting cement
  5. Core Buildup: The core material is shaped and built up around the post to create a stable foundation for the crown.
  6. Crown Placement: Once the core is ready, a custom-made crown is placed over the core to restore the tooth’s appearance and function.
